“The unexamined life is not worth living”
That brilliant Greek philosopher, Socrates, knew something about living life, as evidenced above. That there is an intention to living that breeds personal responsibility and fulfillment. We don’t just wake up every day and leave everything to chance.
True freedom is in leading a fully conscious(Living in the present) life where you understand life’s rules and do your best every day to live by them. Freedom is not having no rules and leading an “anything goes because it feels good” existence. That leads to 330 million different value systems in our country, a certain recipe for social anarchy.
As my dad would say, “There is no free stuff. You may not pay the bill, but someone else is.” This has been great timeless wisdom for me that helped fuel my 43 year career and is additionally energizing the growth of my Family Healing Ministry, “The Family Center For The Sacred Heart”
( www.myfamilyhealer.com ) Dad has been gone now for 30 years, passing at age 64, far too young for a man of his energy, creativity and wisdom. I still miss him every day.
Albert Einstein gave us the classic definition of insanity: “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” He also gave us his less well known reflection on love: “The laws of gravity cannot be held responsible for people falling in love.”
What is the relationship between character building and God’s Eternal Wisdom?? I believe personal character is developed by us being immersed in and absorbing this Timeless Wisdom on a daily basis. I am blessed to have grown up in the 1950’s and early 60’s when this was the reality of the everyday environment I grew up in in suburban Long Island, New York.
This honoring of Eternal Wisdom no longer exists today. It has been replaced by the “It’s All About Me Culture.” This culture of self-centeredness and entitlement has led to the breakdown of the family, which has fueled the worsening of many of our social ills: crime, addiction, higher school dropout rates, less employment opportunity, out of wedlock births etc.
What is the solution to these problems? I don’t have all the answers. I believe God does. He has always known since the beginning of time. He knows we have a limited understanding of life and how to live it out of love for Him, ourselves and others.
As Pastor Rick Warren, author of “The Purpose Driven Life,” would say: “Life is not about making us happy, it’s about preparing us for eternity.” This is another great example of “Eternal Wisdom.” Living life not out of a limited human perspective but out of an unlimited Divine one.
I believe God gave us His 10 Commandments to help us follow His Divine Plan. He knew when he gave us Free Will, that we are like little children, we want to avoid pain at any cost and pursue a life of pleasure.
There is “ow” in the word growth. Whenever we are growing physically, emotionally or spiritually we are going to experience some pain, because God is stretching us out of our comfort zone to manifest more of His Vision for us. I’m not sure if the statement, “You always hurt the one you love,” originates from this growth process.
I do know one thing for sure. God does love us just as we are, the good, the bad and the ugly. If we can accept and love ourselves just as we are, with the goal of living out of Love more every day, then we will begin as Humanity to begin creating Heaven on Earth.
We will use God’s Timeless Wisdom as it comes to us through reading, writing, meditating, talking with other people etc. to help build our character through God’s Fruit Of The Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” This Fruit Of The Spirit will be the seeds from which Heaven on Earth, God’s new Garden Of Eden, will blossom.
May we all learn to manage our thoughts, feelings and behavior, our personal container of love. We must take responsibility for our responses to life, and create a more peaceful world, one person and one day at a time.
